Behind the seams of undicloth®
It all kicked off backstage in the world of theatre, where long days and longer nights are just part of the gig. Between hauling props, climbing ladders, and racing through scene changes, I realised my undies just weren’t cutting it. They’d ride up, twist around, and generally make a tough shift even tougher.
I switched to boxers for a bit more freedom, but that brought a whole new set of problems. Let’s just say, when you're up a ladder asking your team mate to pass you something, you don’t want to be giving them more of a show than they bargained for.
Then came the moment that changed everything a breezy bike ride through Sydney, and a wardrobe malfunction that was one gust away from becoming public theatre. That was it. I decided it was time to take matters (and fabric) into my own hands.
Out came the sewing machine and the very first undicloth® prototype was born. It wasn’t pretty, more patchwork quilt than fashion statement but it was comfortable as hell. I wore them to work that night and knew I was onto something. I just needed help turning my Frankenstein undies into something people might actually want to wear.
Enter Amanda Townsend pattern technician extraordinaire who took my wild sketches and turned them into the undies you see today.
What’s in a name?
During a deep dive into the history of undies (yep, that’s a thing), I stumbled on the humble loincloth. Basic. Brilliant. Comfortable. It got me thinking we call ’em undies here, and that old-school design had something special. So I mashed the two together. And just like that, undicloth® was born.
